Collect for the Week
O God, the protector of all that trust in you,
without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:
increase and multiply upon us your mercy,
that, with you as our ruler and guide,
we may so pass through things temporal
that we finally lose not the things eternal.
Grant this, O heavenly Father,
for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

GOSPEL for the Day: Matthew 13: 47-53

‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

‘Have you understood all this?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.’ When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place.

REFLECTION on the Gospel: contributed by Rev’d Jan

“Without a parable he told them nothing” Matthew 13:34

So, does Jesus tell us something understandable here? I love it how the disciples say “yes”, we understand. Really? Jesus is asking… can you adjust your image of God, your knowing of God, based on me, my revelation – me as the revelation – which does not deny the revelation of the Hebrew Scriptures. That is, the way good Jewish people have been brought up… Jesus is the shift, the ground mover and shaker, the disrupter. Old Covenant becomes New Covenant! Welcome, the brand new day.

Chapter 13 of Matthew is a lovely collection of parables – and Jesus’ teaching of why he teaches in parables. He quotes Psalm 78, v 2, at Matthew 13:35 – “I will open my mouth to speak in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden from the foundation of the world.”

Wow! We know nothing really unless we commit to knowing Jesus the Christ.

All is hidden until we make the decision to open our hearts, our very life, to his teaching and his love.
Those with ears, listen! Help my listening Jesus Christ, help me clear all that does not matter to focus on what you proclaim as matters.

FINAL PRAYER Jim Cotter “Unfolding the Living Word”
Mysterious hidden Presence,
concealed in parable, paradox, and riddle,
disturb our comfort,
question what we take for granted,
challenge the assumptions
by which we usually live,
and so reveal to us the secret of your domain.
We pray this in the name of Jesus
and in the power of the Spirit.
