Tenebrae Service - Good Shepherd

Our Cantors have been hard at work rehearsing their Gregorian chants and motets for this year's Tenebrae Services at Good Shepherd and Bishopsbourne.

Though sombre and reflective, there is a quiet and intense beauty to be found in the rich symbolism and choral tradition of this ancient service.

Tenebrae means darkness; the service is often referred to as the ‘service of the dark’.  The last words of Christ are read,  and candles extinguished progressively, to symbolise the impending death of Jesus on that Friday.  Beautiful choral music surrounds the process, with the climax in the sung Reproaches of Christ.
