PRAYER of the DAY - APBA p 493
Almighty and everlasting God,
of your tender love towards us
you sent your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ,
to take upon him our flesh,
and to suffer death upon the cross,
that all should follow the example of his great humility:
that we may both follow the example of his patience,
and also be made partakers of his resurrection;
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.
GOSPEL for the Day: John 12: 20-36
20Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.
27“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. 31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. 34The crowd answered him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35Jesus said to them, “The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going. 36While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.” After Jesus had said this, he departed and hid from them.
GOSPEL REFLECTION: Helen Menzies
These Greeks often moved around and were among those going up to worship. They must have lived in Palestine for some time, and may well have adopted the Jewish faith. They certainly spoke Aramaic well.
They probably had seen many of Jesus' healings, and heard his teaching. He often moved from one dwelling to another as he travelled so they approached Phillip about his present whereabouts. I like to think he went to find his older brother ,and they went to Jesus. I am sure Jesus would have greeted them, but he immediately started to teach them. A simple everyday illustration.
When I was a child and planted a seed I never thought of death. I was waiting impatiently for the green shoot. Jesus then pointed out that serving him meant knowing the difference between loving our life and hating our lives in this world. He then said whoever does will not only serve him but also the Father who will honour him.
This must have all very challenging for the Greeks as he goes on to speak about what will happen to him, and how from a human point of view he would want to say Father save me from this hour. Then comes the pivotal point – ‘Father glorify your name’. Then there comes the voice from above giving confirmation 'I have done so and will again glorify your name’. Some in the crowd thought it was thunder, others an angel spoke to him. Jesus answered them ‘This voice came for your sake not mine. Judgement is pending. The ruler of this world will be thrown out. When I am lifted up I will draw all people to me.’ He was speaking of his crucifixion.
The listening Jews said we have learnt in the law the Messiah remains forever. Who is this son of man who will be lifted up?
Jesus had told them before that He was the light of the world. His answer now is based on that. The light will be with you only a little while longer. Walk in the light now. You cannot walk in darkness. If you walk in the light you will become children of light.
Loving heavenly Father,
Grant that we may walk closely in your light
to become children of the light
as we travel our daily Faith Journey
through the power of your Holy Spirit.
In Jesus’ name we ask this. Amen.
