PRAYER of the DAY - EASTER SIX APBA p514

Eternal God,

whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life:

grant that we may walk in his way,

rejoice in his truth,

and share his risen life;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen

GOSPEL for the Day: John 16: 12-15

‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

GOSPEL Reflection: Contributed by Graeme Curnow

Jesus knows that His time is drawing to a close and in earlier verses in this Chapter he speaks to His disciples of the grief, trials and tribulations they will encounter. At this point in the passage it does not appear that the disciples have caught on as yet.

I still have many things to say to you: Jesus admits that His own teaching is incomplete and foretells that the Spirit of Truth (the Holy Spirit) will come and provide further instruction and guidance to Jesus followers.

He will guide you into all the truth: In the time of the early Church, and today, the Holy Spirit continues to lead us on to understanding the truth about the nature of Jesus and the significance of what He taught and what He did. Never contradicting Scripture.

He will not speak on his own … He will declare to you things that are to come…He will glorify me: The Holy Spirit will take His authority from Jesus…. He will show them how to work to establish the early Church…The Holy Spirit will use many different ways, situations and gifts of the Spirit to accomplish this commission.

All that the Father has is mine: Is this whole passage (culminating in the latter phrase) foreshadowing the doctrine of the Trinity? ie: There is one eternal God who is the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe . He is the only God that exists. However, within the nature of this one God there are three Personas, or three “centres of consciousness” - The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit co-equal and co-eternal!

FINAL PRAYER: Iona Community, Scotland

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

One God, in perfect Community,

look now on us,

and hear our prayer for our community:

where there is falseness,

smother it by your truth;

where there is coldness,

kindle the flame of your love;

where there is joy and hope,

free us to share it together;

where there is anything

we will not do for ourselves,

make us discontent until it is done.

And make us one,

as you are one.

Amen
