Eternal God,

whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life:

grant that we may walk in his way,

rejoice in his truth,

and share his risen life;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

GOSPEL for the Day: Mark 16:15-20

15And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. 16The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18they will pick up snakes in their hands,* and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.’

19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.

GOSPEL Reflection: Contributed by Alan Dann

These are the final words of the final chapter of St Mark’s Gospel.

Go into the world and proclaim (in other versions, preach) the good news. Believers who are baptized will be saved and non-believers will be condemned. Believers will have abilities to do remarkable things in God’s name; Casting out Demons, Talking in Tongues, Handling snakes with immunity, and Surviving the drinking of deadly poison. In addition they were given the power to lay hands on the sick and they will recover.

These assertions have caused great debate through the ages. Some believe that these abilities are available to those who have faith, some dismiss them as being impossible and others take positions in between. The Acts of the Apostles confirm that most of these abilities were conferred on the Apostles.

Contemporary medicine and science would not encourage some of these practices and we know not to pick up snakes nor to drink poison however, there are lots of instances every day where Faith has had a hand in medical outcomes. I know of at least half a dozen instances where God has said to me “your time has not yet come”. The hands of clever doctors and prayer have intervened.

We are left to wonder and marvel as the Lord Jesus is taken up into heaven to be with the Father and the job of the Apostles to go out and proclaim the good news everywhere commences.

May God be praised.

Eternal God,

by raising Jesus from the dead

you proclaimed his victory,

and by his ascension,

you declared him Lord of all:

lift up our hearts to heaven,

where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.
