Almighty God,

whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life

of all who put their trust in him:

raise us, we pray, from the death of sin

to the life of righteousness;

that we may ever seek the things which are above,

where he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

GOSPEL for the Day: John 3: 31-36

31The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. 33Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. 34He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. 36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.

GOSPEL Reflection: Contributed by Meredith Nicholls

John the Baptist again, in a testimony about Jesus, demonstrates his humility in acknowledging the divinity of Jesus contrasted with his own humanity. A synonym for humility is ‘down – to – earthness’ (Merriam - Webster).

Jesus himself testifies that his divine knowledge, teachings and the actions born out in his life come directly from the Father (Jn 5:19 - 20). If we are searching for truth in our lives, truth that lies beyond human wisdom, truth that is not corrupted or twisted by politics and agendas both personal and corporate, - this truth is found only in Christ, his teachings and his life. God is truth and light – there is no deceit or darkness in God.

God loves His Son and by placing everything in his hands (v. 35) affords him all trust and authority ‘so that in everything he might have the supremacy’ (Col 1: 16-18).

As people of faith we can be assured that all things that were created were created by him and for him and he holds and sustains all of his creation (Col 1: 16-17). When we place our trust in Jesus we have found the source of truth and a pathway into eternal life.

God, you have wonderfully created us in your own image,

and yet more wonderfully restored us in your Son Jesus.

As he came to share our human nature

may we also share in his divine glory.
