PRAYER of the DAY - APBA p605
Stir up, we pray you, O Lord,
the wills of your faithful people,
that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works,
may by you be plenteously rewarded;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
GOSPEL for the Day: Luke 21: 1-4
He looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; 2he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; 4for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
GOSPEL REFLECTION: Cheryl Courtice
Jesus sees me…he looks through the crowd and notices me.
The offerings of God's people are measured not by quantity or quality, but by the heart of faith that pours them out.
Do I carefully calculate what I can afford and give out of my abundance or do I give with that utterly reckless generosity which could give no more?
Do I give grudgingly, for the sake of prestige or self display?
Is my gift the inevitable outflow of a loving heart, given, because I cannot help it?
In God's economy, the sacrifice is what matters. The amount sacrificed supersedes the amount given.
When I offer myself as a living sacrifice, do I give all of me, confident in God's promises or do I crawl off the altar when I think no one is looking?
God sees. God knows.
FINAL PRAYER
Most loving and generous God. Thank you for all that you have given me. Help me to use these gifts for Your purpose and glory. Help me to remember when I offer myself as a living sacrifice that “Love so amazing, so divine demands my soul, my life, my all.” In Jesus’s name/the name of Jesus.
Amen
