O God,

whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people:

help us when hear his voice

to know him who calls us each by name,

and to follow where he leads;

who with you and the Holy Spirit

lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever.

GOSPEL for the Day: John 10: 22-30

22-24 They were celebrating Hanukkah just then in Jerusalem. It was winter. Jesus was strolling in the Temple across Solomon’s Porch. The Jews, circling him, said, “How long are you going to keep us guessing? If you’re the Messiah, tell us straight out.”

25-30 Jesus answered, “I told you, but you don’t believe. Everything I have done has been authorized by my Father, actions that speak louder than words. You don’t believe because you’re not my sheep. My sheep recognize my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them real and eternal life. They are protected from the Destroyer for good. No one can steal them from out of my hand. The Father who put them under my care is so much greater than the Destroyer and Thief. No one could ever get them away from him. I and the Father are one heart and mind.”

GOSPEL Reflection: Contributed by Rosemary Bruton

One of my favourite subjects at school was English. I just loved reading a book and then as a class looking at the overriding themes, the characters and the use of words. In my NIV, the title of these verses is Religious Leaders Surround Jesus at the Temple. The Temple was the place that God established here on Earth as his home. Where the people could come to worship and pray to Him.

I love the picture of Jesus strolling in Solomon’s Colonnade. A relaxed walk, at ease in his Father’s house. But what is this, the religious leaders “surround” Jesus. The imagery is like that of hawks circling their prey. They will not be satisfied until this Jesus has been got rid of. He is claiming that He and God are one. The Messiah.

They continue to jaunt him “If you are the Christ, tell us”. Jesus reply is simple, “I have and you don’t believe me”. Have you had those conversations with people talking about Jesus and they just think you’re crazy, when you attempt to convince them that Jesus is real. Or their pride gets in the way and they just switch off.

Even though Jesus was directing his answer to the religious leaders, it is such a great reassurance for those who are believers reading Jesus answer to those who ridiculed him. A real leader’s statement. Such a wonderful promise of protection to people who follow Jesus. When you hear the words of the Bible, it’s truth and you know it. It resonates within your soul and it feels so right and good within you. It strengthens you and gives you such a wonderful sense of joy. You know it’s Him!

FINAL PRAYER: Hymn “He lives” Alfred Ackley

1 I serve a risen Savior, he’s in the world today; I know that he is living, whatever others say; I see his hand of mercy, I hear his voice of cheer, and just the time I need him he’s always near.

Refrain: He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way. He lives, he lives, salvation to impart! You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart.

2 In all the world around me I see his loving care, and though my heart grows weary, I never will despair; I know that he is leading through all the stormy blast, the day of his appearing will come at last. [Refrain]

3 Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and sing eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King! The hope of all who seek him, the help of all who find, no other is so loving, so good and kind. [Refrain]
