PRAYER of the DAY - APBA p 507

Gracious Father,

who in your great mercy made glad the disciples

with the sight of the risen Lord:

give us such awareness of his presence with us

that we may be strengthened and sustained by his risen life,

and serve you continually in righteousness and truth;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

GOSPEL for the Day: John 6: 30-35

30So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’ 32Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is that which* comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ 34They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’

35 Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

GOSPEL REFLECTION: Leanne Hallas

These five verses are a small part of a much longer speech given by Jesus to the Pharisees after they rebuke him for healing a lame man on the Sabbath.

In these verses as in this whole passage Jesus explains that his work and his testimony come from his Father, God. He explains that all true testimony and judgement comes from the Father.

Before him has come John who attested to the truth from God given in the form of Jesus. John had given true testimony of the coming of the Messiah. The Son of God.

Jesus has told us that we come to the Father through faith and belief in him. Even he cannot give true testimony alone. Judgement and truth come from the Father.

Like John we can be a 'shining light' giving testimony of redemption and eternal life with the Father through our faith in Jesus Chris

FINAL PRAYER John Bell TiS 707

Bread is blessed and broken,

wine is blessed and poured:

take this and remember

Christ the Lord.

Share the food of heaven

earth cannot afford.

Here is grace in essence –

Christ the Lord.

Know yourself forgiven,

find yourself restored,

meet a friend for ever –

Christ the Lord.

God has kept his promise

sealed by sign and word:

here, for those who want him –

Christ the Lord.

Amen
