PRAYER of the DAY - APBA p 505

Almighty God,

whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life

of all who put their trust in him:

raise us, we pray, from the death of sin

to the life of righteousness;

that we may ever seek the things which are above,

where he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen

GOSPEL for the Day: John 6: 16-21

16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

GOSPEL REFLECTION: Peter Brady

This passage is almost the perfect plot for a road trip gone awry movie. A group of misfits sets off without proper planning, get into trouble and it takes the arrival of their sensible friend, who they've left behind precisely because he is sensible, to retrieve the situation.

We're not misfits and are unlikely to go boating without checking the weather forecast, but have we - like the disciples - tried to go on ahead without waiting for Jesus? How often have we depended on ourselves without reference to Him? And how did that work out?

Fortunately for the disciples, and us, God does not forget us and is always watching over us during the storms we encounter in life. In fact, He is not just watching over us but is always with us and speaking to us, telling us again and again, 'it is I, do not be afraid'. We need to accept that we cannot solve every problem and recognise God's presence and trust in Him to help us. Similarly, we need to be prepared to accept the reality that help may not be in the form we want it to be but rather in the form that God knows we need. We need to take Jesus into our boat every day and the storms around us will subside.

FINAL PRAYER

Lord, guide us through the wilderness, protect us through the storm and bring us home rejoicing at the wonders you have shown.

Amen
