PRAYER of the DAY - APBA p 519

O God,

you withdraw from our sight

that you may be known by our love:

help us to enter the cloud where you are hidden,

and to surrender all our certainty

to the darkness of faith

in Jesus Christ.

Amen

GOSPEL for the Day: John 7: 37-39

37On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

GOSPEL REFLECTION: Michelle Chapman

It seems natural to me that on the “last and greatest day of the festival” … of the Jewish Festival of the Tabernacles in Galilee, that Jesus would speak in a loud voice to the many crowds of various peoples gathered together. There appeared to be different people who thought of Jesus in different ways but here in these verses Jesus is being profoundly clear, albeit speaking about a future happening in time. Jesus again uses an everyday necessity, water, to proclaim that whoever believes in Him will have “rivers of living water” within them or “flowing from them” ie in our lifeblood as being co-heirs with Jesus.

We thirst, we drink water. Doctors tell us to drink more water, not to become dehydrated as much of our bodily systems rely on water, water and more water. We need water everyday and we need the power of the thirst quenching Spirit that we know as the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost weekend, we can replenish again our faith in Jesus who says “whoever believes in me” shall be filled with the Holy Spirit as our Advocate in our earthly life. Praise the Lord that God did not leave believers alone in this world but sent His Advocate to plead our prayers for us and to guide each one of us to understand God’s will each day. Don’t become dehydrated, don’t forget to drink of the “living waters” each day and may anyone who reads this and is spiritually dry and thirsty, believe in Christ Jesus and be saved. Your life from then on will be filled with spiritual awareness and peace, as the Holy Spirit will ministers to you and for you.

FINAL PRAYER “Come to the water” © Frank Andersen

Come to the water! You who are thirsty! Though you have nothing, I bid you come!

And be filled with the goodness I have to offer! Come! Listen! Live.

Why spend your money on what cannot fill The emptiness deep in your heart?

Listen to My word and you will enjoy Goodness and peace in your heart!

Just as the heavens are high above earth; My ways and thoughts beyond you!

Call me your Father and know I am near! I will be Father to you!

Just as the rain falls to water the earth; Just as a seed becomes bread

My word upon you can never return Until My longing is filled!

Come to the water! You who are thirsty! Though you have nothing, I bid you come!

And be filled with the goodness I have to offer! Come! Listen! Live.
